Samaritans
Samaritans provide confidential listening and emotional support 24 hours a day
by telephone, email and text. There are more than 200 branches throughout
the country running several training courses a year. Aside from working on
the phones and text/email, there are opportunities in fundraising, outreach,
schools and prison support as well as in training and mentoring new volunteers.

Oxford
Nightline
Oxford
Nightline is a student run listening, information and support service for students in Oxford. Training in listening
skills is run each term, and there is more information on the
site. Other universities
usually have Nightlines too - see National Nightline's
website. If you are thinking of becoming a Nightline volunteer, I would
recommend investigating what your Nightline's policy on dealing with
obscene and abusive callers is (see further details here).
Modern
capitalism, organising the reduction of all social life to a spectacle,
cannot offer any other spectacle than that of our own alienation. (Kotanyi
Vaneigem, International Socialism No. 6 (1961))
